On the 26th of November 2022 we organized our second Amenti Gathering. The topic was: Decolonizing the Mind - Combining Philosophy and Dance.
We invited Sandew Hira this evening, who gave a lecture about decolonization. He explained how we still live in a world full of colonist thoughts, behaviors, standards, and art and mostly dove into the history of this fact.
He accurately depicted how our history has shaped our present through his lecture. And now, it is up to us to decolonize our minds so that the future will be more wholesome, equal, and just.
Since we are Amenti, and we have expertise in translating stories into dance, we combined the theory of this evening with dance. Art itself is the perfect tool to become more aware of all kinds of topics. It allows the audience to feel and experience the theoretical information we absorb. Sandew and our dancers conversed; Sandew explained in words, and we reacted through movement.
We danced to beautiful and also heartbreaking songs like Redemption Song from Bob Marley, Christopher Columbus from Burning Spears, and Imagine from John Lennon.
In the end, Gil the Grid linked Decolonizing the Mind to the culture of HipHop. He explained how the philosophy of decolonization is a key element within this culture. Gil brought more modern songs that now bring the same message as artists before them, but differently. Think about Kendrick Lamar, Michaela Coel, and Kojey Radical.
Thank you to everyone present. It was a much-needed evening, and the conversations that the evening sparked afterward were terrific. This is not the last gathering on this topic... We´re sure to be back soon!
