Taking Root | Dominican Republic
We are people from different walks of life, backgrounds, heritages, and countries. After a connecting phone call, Raphaelle Francois asked Elia if we could bring our MoveMeant to the Dominican Republic, and the choice was quickly made.
Angel and also Joao both call this republic their native country. So, without a plan but with a deep desire, we flew to the Dominican Republic a few weeks later to connect with Raphaelle and teach an intensive to a group of people there. The idea was that when we were there, we would discuss future plans because this is a country that we not only feel a connection with through Angel but also a colonized country. The remnants of this painful past are still felt within the society and its people.
As a decolonial practice, we feel obligated to help spread awareness, specifically in these parts of the world.

It was a trip with many facets: returning home, finding new connections, and beginning a MoveMeant course that we will provide in the future.
We find it essential to show you how we work since it's different from your average organization. The people you see at work are the people you often see the most; that is why we treat each other as family—and that is why we find adventures like these. They help us grow, discover, and learn about different cultures and histories.
